How Long will it Take?
We recommend you allow 1 hour - this gives you time to arrive, select your piece, think of designs and settle down to painting. The length of time taken will depend on how complicated your design is. |
Do I need to be Arty, Creative or able to Paint or Work on the Potter's Wheel?
Absolutely not - anyone can do it! Use our design centre with stencils, stamps and magazines or bring your own ideas. You can design in pencil or trace. Even a few brush strokes from a 2 year-old can result in an amazing piece once glazed and fired.
Our friendly staff will take you step by step through the process and help find a design and painting techniques that will work for you. The whole idea is that you have fun!

What if I make a Mistake?
Our staff is trained to assist you so please always ask first before trying to remove mistakes. We have special tools and techniques to remove unwanted paint although dark colours may smudge. With a little creativity and flexibility in your design any "mistake" can be used to make your piece a unique work of art! Paint can be washed off but if the piece becomes too wet you will have little success in repainting the piece. Remember to ask our staff for help - they will know the best solution.

Is the Colour Factory Just for Kids?
Certainly not! We have people of all ages who love to come and paint and play with clay. Amazing results can be achieved by all levels of ability and all ages. Children are often less inhibited than adults in creating unique works of art but we make it really easy for adults who haven't painted since school days. We have stencils, pictures to copy, shaped sponges and lots more to help you get that paint onto the ceramic piece. |
When can we take the Painted Ceramic Piece Home?
The firing process takes about 6 days during which time:
the piece is left to dry over-night.
it is glazed and left to dry again.
the glaze is smoothed over and the piece loaded into the kiln.
the firing is a 24 hour cycle by the time the kiln reaches it's full heat and then cooled slowly (for best results).
the piece is unloaded from the kiln and checked for any cracks or abnormalities which are all part of the "nature of ceramics".
your piece is then matched to the description on your docket and wrapped ready for pick-up.
Pottery takes double the time. We cannot fire it unless we are sure that the piece is absolutely dry. Any moisture in the clay could cause cracking. |

When can I come and Paint the Piece of Pottery I made?
You can do that two weeks after you have made it.
|
Do the Paints Wash out or should we bring Aprons?
Our paints are water soluble so will wash out of clothes easily. If the colour is dark a little soaking first will help. We do have a few aprons on hand if you particularly want to protect your clothes. Kids are given aprons to use while painting and while on the wheel.

Are the Ceramics Safe in the Dishwasher, Microwave and Oven?
YES! Our ceramics are fired to a high temperature so are compatible with use in the dishwasher, microwave and oven. Like all ceramics you need to treat them with care - they will break if dropped or knocked and may crack if they undergo sudden changes in temperature e.g. taken from a very hot oven to a cold surface.
