HISTORY
Mosaic Ancient and Modern
The history of mosaic seems to begin in the ancient Near East, with some of the earliest known pieces, made with pebbles of contrasting colours, coming from Greece. It was the Romans; however who really developed the art of Mosaic.
Mosaics are often made of local stones, although glass was sometimes combined with natural materials to give highlights of colours. And it comes in all different sizes. Once you have started to work in mosaic, you will begin to notice mosaic - like qualities in all sorts of ordinary objects around you. When you are looking for visual images to inspire you, a useful starting point might be anything you have collected because it appealed to you.
Design, composition, technical competence and cutting ability are all important aspects of mosaic making, but on of the most fundamental skills involved in creating a successful mosaic is the use of colour.
